Retirement planning is one of those topics that easily gets put on the back burner in the midst of daily life. Often, this is not due to a lack of interest, but rather to the tedious starting point: information about one's own entitlements lies gathering dust in various file folders or unopened envelopes.
However, my top principle in consulting is: order before optimization. Before we think about new coverage, we need a clean foundation. This is precisely why the legislature has created a very useful tool: The Digital Pension Overview.
As your independent broker, I will briefly explain here how the state portal works and why it is the perfect first step to organize the topic of retirement for yourself.
What is the Digital Pension Overview?
The Digital Pension Overview is a free, ad-free, and secure online portal of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund. It pools your acquired entitlements from all three pillars of retirement planning – the statutory pension, occupational pension schemes, and private contracts (such as Riester or classic life insurance policies) – in one central, digital place.
How the process works
You have to sift through (almost) no old folders for this. The system is designed to be pleasantly straightforward:
The Registration: For secure access, you only need your identity card with the online ID function activated (eID) as well as your tax identification number (tax ID). It is not as terrible as it sounds: there is also an explanatory video.
The Inquiry: In the portal, you can specifically select the providers of your retirement products or start a collective inquiry to the connected institutions with a single click.
The Result: Within a maximum of five days, the responses from the providers flow into your personal overview. There, you will see a comparison of your already-acquired entitlements as well as forecasts for the future.
The real advantages in daily life
Centralized Structure: The portal puts an end to the tedious gathering of information. The figures are prepared in a standardized and comparable manner.
Rediscovering forgotten assets: Because the system queries all connected providers upon your request, entitlements from old contracts often reappear that you had completely forgotten about in daily life.
Data Sovereignty: The overview is intended exclusively for you. The data is not forwarded to third parties, but can easily be exported as a PDF or spreadsheet to be used for a consultation.
What you need to know: The limitations of the system
The portal provides an excellent database, but it does not do the strategic interpretation for you. There are three things you should know for a realistic assessment:
Not absolutely everything is included yet: Providers managing fewer than 1,000 pension entitlements, or professional pension schemes, are currently not required to participate. Real estate or fund portfolios are also not recorded here, as the portal only pools classic pension and retirement products.
No pension gap analysis: The portal transparently shows you what you have. However, it does not calculate whether that is enough for your life. Whether a gap will arise in old age depends on your very individual costs and life goals.
Gross is not net: The figures displayed are not adjusted for inflation, and taxes or social security contributions have not yet been deducted. Although there is a "Pension Lab" in the portal with an inflation calculator for your own scenarios, you still have to strategically evaluate the actual purchasing power of the amounts yourself.
The next step
Make it easy for yourself: Use the Digital Pension Overview to clear the paper chaos. Export the results and check off this open item on your mental to-do list.
Once you have the facts in front of you and want to know what these sums mean in reality after taxes and inflation, let's talk. I will interpret these numbers for you, and together we will calmly check whether your current foundation is sufficient for the life you want to lead later – completely without sales pressure, simply as an honest inventory.
